10 Incredible Photo Spots in Denver, Colorado

Vantage Team · May 20, 2026

Denver sits at the edge of the Great Plains and the base of the Rocky Mountains — a combination that produces some of the most varied and dramatic photography in the American West. Here are ten spots worth scouting, with notes on timing, access, and what to bring.

1. Red Rocks Amphitheatre — Morrison, CO

Best time: Sunrise (east-facing formations catch direct early light)
Tags: landscape, rock formations, architecture, golden hour

Red Rocks is the obvious first entry. The tilted sandstone formations photograph well year-round, but sunrise here is something else — the orange-red rock glows when it catches direct early light, and the amphitheater seats frame the Denver skyline in the distance.

Come early. The parking lot opens at 5 AM and fills fast on weekends. Bring a wide-angle lens for the formations and a telephoto to isolate the city behind.

2. Maroon Bells — Aspen, CO (2.5 hrs)

Best time: Sunrise or first light
Tags: landscape, mountain, lake, reflection, fall foliage

Yes, it’s a drive. No, it’s not optional if you’re serious about Colorado landscape photography. The Maroon Bells reflected in Maroon Lake at first light is one of the most photographed scenes in North America — and it still earns every cliché.

In summer, the road to the trailhead requires a reservation bus from Aspen Highlands. In autumn, arrive in the dark if you want a composition without 200 other photographers already set up.

3. Union Station — Downtown Denver

Best time: Blue hour (30 minutes after sunset)
Tags: architecture, historic, cityscape, long exposure, blue hour

Denver’s Union Station has had a renovation that makes it genuinely beautiful to photograph. The great hall interior is warm and golden; the exterior faces northwest, which means blue hour light hits it cleanly with the sky still color behind the building.

Bring a tripod. The long-exposure light trails from taxis and rideshares on 17th Street add movement to an otherwise static composition.

4. Rocky Mountain National Park — Estes Park, CO (1.5 hrs)

Best time: Sunrise at Bear Lake, midday at higher elevations
Tags: landscape, mountain, lake, wildlife, fall foliage, elk

RMNP is a day trip from Denver and earns an entry on any list. Bear Lake is the accessible option for landscape work — the reflection of Hallett Peak in the lake is reliable and well-framed. For wildlife, the elk rut in September and October draws herds to the meadows near Moraine Park. Bring a long lens (300mm minimum) and keep your distance.

Timed entry permits are required May through October — plan ahead.

5. Denver Botanic Gardens — Congress Park

Best time: Spring (April–May), soft overcast light
Tags: wildflowers, macro, spring blossoms, portrait

Underrated for photography. The Denver Botanic Gardens has well-maintained beds of tulips, irises, and native wildflowers in spring that produce excellent macro and close-up work. Overcast days diffuse harsh light and saturate colors.

Entry requires a timed ticket. The Japanese Garden section offers clean, minimal compositions.

6. Sloan’s Lake — West Denver

Best time: Sunrise (east-facing lake edge)
Tags: cityscape, reflection, lake, golden hour, wide angle

Sloan’s Lake is Denver’s largest city lake and sits with a clear sightline to the downtown skyline to the east. At sunrise, the buildings catch direct light while the lake is still, producing clean reflections. The west bank is the shooting position — walk south along the path to vary the foreground.

Free parking. No crowds at 5:30 AM. One of the most underrated sunrise spots in the city.

7. Roxborough State Park — Littleton, CO

Best time: Early morning or late afternoon (side light on formations)
Tags: rock formations, landscape, desert, wildflowers, moderate hiking

Roxborough looks like a mini Red Rocks without the crowds. Dramatic red sandstone fins rise out of scrub oak and prairie — good for compositions that feel remote without requiring a backcountry hike. The Fountain Valley Trail (3 miles) keeps the formations close.

Best in spring when wildflowers fill the foreground or autumn when the scrub oak turns gold.

8. 16th Street Mall & Confluence Park — Downtown Denver

Best time: Blue hour, night
Tags: urban, cityscape, street, long exposure, light trails

The intersection of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River at Confluence Park gives you a green foreground with the downtown skyline rising behind it. Blue hour is ideal. The pedestrian bridge creates leading lines into the frame.

Walk north to the 16th Street Mall for street photography — the free shuttle buses and mix of architecture make for interesting candid and environmental work.

9. Great Sand Dunes National Park — Alamosa, CO (4 hrs)

Best time: Sunrise or sunset
Tags: sand dunes, landscape, long exposure, wide angle, minimalist

The tallest sand dunes in North America — in Colorado, which surprises most people. The dunes change color dramatically from gold to orange to deep shadow as the sun moves, and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains rise directly behind them.

This is a commitment: four hours from Denver, and you’ll want to overnight near Alamosa to catch sunrise properly. Worth every mile.

10. Georgetown Loop Railroad Overlook — Georgetown, CO (1 hr)

Best time: Fall color peak (mid-October), morning
Tags: landscape, historic, fall foliage, mountain, bridges

The Georgetown Loop Railroad winds through a steep mountain valley above Georgetown, and the overlook spots along the road give clear views of the historic loop bridge and aspens below. Mid-October is peak color here, and the combination of golden aspens, old iron bridge, and passing steam train (if you time it right) is a genuinely unique Colorado shot.

Check the railroad schedule at the Georgetown Loop Historic Mining & Railroad Park — train times vary by season.
